From the red carpet of the Saturns
I’ve been to a couple of red carpets, but none like this one. First, I have never been press before. And the longer we were there, the better that felt. Second, the number of press people was so small. There were only between thirty and forty of us altogether. This number included those of us who were interviewing, videotaping, and taking photography. It had a very laid back atmosphere that I was unaccustomed to at an event. One of the first people I saw on the red carpet was Kevin Sorbo, from Hercules and later Andromeda. As Sorbo passed in front of us, I asked him if he really was on Twitter. He said yes and then began to explain to me why he liked Twitter—as he posed for the press. Another fun and quirky experience that happened on the red carpet involved Doug Jones. I first saw Jones at the Heroes event for the Jules Verne Festival, back in December of 2007. Jones had the honor of presenting a prestigious award to comic book legend Stan “the Man” Lee. Doug Jones is an interesting actor in the way of Ron Perlman. You have likely seen him, but you might have no idea what he looks like out of makeup. Doug Jones played the Silver Surfer in the second Fantastic Four movie, for instance. The Jules Verne event itself made me a fan of Jones. He had written his own speech—a very touching one at that—and appeared to be a man who was filled with great joy and love. When I met Jones at the Saturns, I told him that he is one of the nicest celebrities that I have ever come across. He broke into a smile and took me into a hug, then kissed my cheek. He thanked me and told me to never change. I watched him a little later talking to someone else on press and I saw that he was touching that man’s cheeks, and smiling.
The first Heroes actor I met on the red carpet was our Queen herself, Cristine Rose. By way of Wendi the Makeup Lady’s Twitter, I had heard that Cris would be presenting with Jack Coleman. Let me tell you one thing: it is always a special treat to see Cristine. She’s effervescent, joyful, and eager to converse. The first thing she did when she saw me was make mention to the interview questions that we sent her weeks ago. She apologized and then thanked us for our patience. As everyone is instructed to be, she was tight-lipped about Season 4. While spoilers are nice, I prefer the conversation itself. My question for Cristine came from a friend of mine: now that she had her MFA, would she like to teach in the future. That answer, as well as the rest of interview, shall appear here soon in the form of a video file (thank you, Debbie!)
After Cristine got prompted to leave us—as I had spent about four minutes with her—Michael Emerson, of Lost, saw my recorder and came my way. I was not prepared for this, but ran with it. The impromptu interview was both challenging and fun. I would prefer that I had not forgotten John Locke’s name, but otherwise it went off without a hitch. Soon after Emerson left, I found myself more interested in looking at the growing crowd behind us. The members of the Academy seemed to have been instructed to gather in the courtyard behind us. I saw a few faces that I recognized, but wasn’t too sure about who they were. Then there was one face that I was nearly positive it was exactly who I thought it was: none other than former Heroes writer Jesse Alexander! I broke away from the red carpet to speak to Alexander for a couple of minutes about his new NBC show Day One. He said that the network had just screened the first episode the night before and had really liked it. He then told me about the release date (March, but with heavily advertisement during the Winter Olympics), and gave me a quick run-down of some of the writing staff, including his fellow former Heroes writer Jeph Loeb. Expect to see more of Jesse Alexander and Day One here when we get closer to the release date.
The biggest treat for me during the Saturns was getting to interview Adrian Pasdar. While I had seen him last month at the Star Trek premiere, and in April at the Heroes for Autism event when Band From TV took the stage, the last time I had gotten to speak to him for but a minute was last September, at the Countdown to the Premiere. You have to understand that a conversation with Adrian Pasdar is a treasured affair. He’s a deep soul, and possesses a quick mind to boot. Having experienced a great many things and interesting experiences in his life, he’s a wealth of information that is very appealing to story collectors like me. I love telling people his story about how he has a tooth buried under the Eiffel Tower. Who else do you know, or know of, who can say that? Adrian is an interesting fellow, and his being an actor is just one very small piece of that.
I was able to ask Adrian one question in regards to the show, that has been on my mind since I started reading some people believe in opposition to what I believe. What that is all about you will see in the video soon. But I will tell you one thing: my perception was correct. I mainly asked him about his trip. He told us that the things that were not included in his videos included the times where things got kind of close. There was one time, while he was on the continental shelf, where, due to the winds, the wave that he faced was over three stories tall! It was obvious by his voice and mannerisms that a part of him belongs to the sea.
After the red carpet portion, the press was sent to the press room to wait. It was about an hour and a half before we saw anybody. While waiting, we were given an envelope that contained a press release and the names of the winners. Debbie pointed out who won Best Supporting Actor in a TV series and I responded by covering my mouth and grinning from ear to ear. As you know by now, Adrian had won. Truth be told, I had a sneaking suspicion he would win, as he was attending the event; as I had learned from the Scream Awards last year, the people who are attending are the people who have won. I still don’t like that Adrian and Milo were up against one another, but I am so glad that one of them won! Don’t tell Milo: but Adrian was my favorite for the category. Adrian seems so often to be overlooked and he’s such a great actor in the way that he has a knack of making others around him shine. We have now seen this with him and most of the actors on Heroes. I knew that there would be some juicy stuff between him and Jack Coleman and him and Zachary Quinto. Great stuff!
I’m quite a bit interested to see Adrian’s speech, as Adrian is one of the humblest actors I have ever met. According to LoquaciousMuse, of AllThingsFangirl.com, he was that: Adrian spoke of his Near Dark co-star, Lance Henriksen—winner of the Life Career Award—during his acceptance speech. Now consider Adrian’s words that he posted to his YouTube channel Buckshotwon: “thanks for all the congrats! it was a great honor to win. but honestly, they should have called it the best SUPPORTED actor award, because without my cast around me there is no way i would have won. so here's to them!” If you do come across Adrian’s speech on tape, please let us know, and we will put it up here. When Adrian came to speak to the press, he got a bit silly with Zach Levi. He definitely knows how to keep a crowd laughing. I only spoke to him for a moment, as he had to catch up with Edward James Olmos (who I hear was once stuck somewhere in the African desert with Adrian) and had to leave, but, because of keeping in touch with Isa, I was able to tell him about the support his fans had been giving him on his YouTube since hearing about his win. He was excited and I think quite a bit surprised by his win. This is a man who acts because he loves it, and possibly for the challenge, too. But he seeks no accolades or special recognition. Adrian Pasdar only does what he is passionate about doing. And I think he is just a bit incredible for that. He’s a great example to follow.
So from HousePetrelli.com: congratulations to you, Mr. Pasdar, for your best SUPPORTED actor award!
